Part 1: Theoretical Background

Aim: To study the efficiency of given suspending agents on the stability of a suspension.

Objectives:

Requirements: Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Azithromycin, Water, Suspending Agents (Xanthan Gum, NaCMC, Tragacanth, Bentonite, Acacia), Measuring Cylinder, Timer, Spatula, Beaker.

Principle: Suspending agents increase viscosity and reduce the rate of sedimentation. A good suspending agent minimizes the sedimentation ratio.

Equation: Sedimentation Ratio (F) = Vu / Vo

Procedure:

  1. Select drug, suspending agent, and concentration.
  2. Mix selected suspending agent in water vehicle.
  3. Add drug and make up to volume.
  4. Apply number of inversions to disperse.
  5. Observe sediment volume and calculate sedimentation ratio.
